"The Lovers" by Rene Magritte
I am really drawn to this simple surrealist painting. The muted colours, the mysterious shrouds, and simple shading all work for me. The background story also adds to it. Supposedly, at the age of 14 Magritte’s mother committed suicide by drowning. He was there as his mother was dragged from the water with her face enshrouded by a wet nightgown. Strong stuff. However, I can’t help but think the faces were shrouded because he couldn’t get them right. We shall see.
