"The Portrait" by Rene Magritte
First of all, regardless of the title, I think this is just a still life and not a deeply significant “Portrait”. If it was a portrait, I think he would have named it “Still Life”. Having said that, I have no idea what he is trying to say in this painting, but I really like it. Maybe he was a vegetarian. I have heard it described as “marvelously strange” and I will stick with that. On a side note, it is painted over a portion of a thought to be lost Magritte nude called “The Enchanted Pose”.
