"Annah the Javanese" by Paul Gauguin
I don’t think this is a great painting, or even a good one. However, it does feature Gauguin’s pet monkey. Big deal. He had been living in the jungles of Tahiti and was lonely. What intrigues/scares me is the fact that Emily Carr also had a pet monkey. How is that possible? A monkey in Victoria in 1925? I find the parallels between these two artists interesting and will investigate further with the aid of a large government grant.
