"Design Basics/Illusion of Space" by Max Beckmann
A great street scene replete with wicked angles and GNAYesq buildings. I am intrigued by the lack of vegetation and minimal peopling. The sky is mysterious but not ominous. A great palette that suggests a dusky dusk in an old city. Something strange seems to have occurred or is about to. This makes it for me. As for the cat, I think he borrowed it from Chagall, and it suggests to me sales may have been slumping. Future thesis topic: “ From the Cave to the Canvas” – the desperate use of cats in paintings – a long history. Really long.
