"Painting, Smoking, Eating" by Philip Guston
I think I showed you this piece last year but it really fits the “Cry for Help” category so you get to see it again. A man lies in bed smoking, balancing a jar of paintbrushes and a plate of french fries on his belly. The blood like ketchup is everywhere and it looks like as if his balloon of a head is about to burst. Things do not look good. But, even though Guston was a childhood friend of Pollack and Rothko, and he witnessed his own father’s suicide, he himself lived to the ripe old age of 67. What we learned this week : Being an artist is extremely hazardous to your health. DO NOT attempt painting or drawing without first consulting your doctor!
