"Still Life with Skull" by Paul Cezanne
Imagine you are an artist and you are in the mood to paint a still life. You set up a table and haphazardly toss on a cloth (because you don’t want it to look staged). You grab some fruit – pears, apples, oranges, whatever you have handy – and sprinkle them around. So far it’s a pretty flat image so you need to add something with height like a bottle or maybe even a skull. A skull? Who doesn’t have one of those kicking around the studio? I have several. How many did Cezanne have and where did he get them anyway? Let’s find out.
