"Skull with Burning Cigarette" by Vincent van Gogh
Yesterday we saw that there is a rich tradition of Dutch painters depicting skulls and other bones. So I think a young impressionable Vincent was just jumping on the bandwagon when he did this painting. He didn’t own this skeleton but encountered it at a life (haha) drawing class. I would love to know why Vincent added the cigarette. In the late 1800’s there was no fear that smoking was bad for your health, yet this image makes a great anti-smoking statement. Further proof that V van G was a time travelling alien. I guess.
