Meanwhile over in Europe, in this case Pompeii, artists were busy painting frescos onto the fresh plaster of villa walls. This was a popular technique that provided long lasting results. Compare this 2,000-year-old image to a photo you printed five years ago. Your photo will have faded but this painting still looks great even after being buried in volcanic ash and or lava. This piece beautifully depicts two popular Roman pastimes - Dancing and Flagellation. While dancing is still popular today, flagellation has really dropped off the map. For me, the two always go hand in hand, so I have quit dancing.
