I love E.J. Hughes’s stylized west coast landscapes. They often include ships like this that are always belching smoke. In this painting the smoke leads us into the picture and creates a great sense of movement. I think the black smoke here also makes this an environmental cautionary tale of sorts. Remember: where there is smoke - there is fire! Conveniently in a kind of life imitating art way, tomorrow I will be boarding a steamer/ferry bound for Nanaimo to study this great artists work in the field.
