"Nanaimo Harbour" by E.J. Hughes
As you can see my ship came in and so did E.J. Hughes’s. Having just come from this harbour it is fun to look at another artists view of something I am considering painting. I’m not exactly sure what year he painted this but I think there is a GNAY like time warp going on. There is also a simplification of subject and an amplification of colour that GNAY often employs. In the early 1950’s E.J. was considering quitting painting and becoming a postman as his pictures were only fetching a few hundred dollars. A Montreal art dealer saved him and his paintings are now worth hundreds of thousands. I just applied for a job at the post office.
