It’s no secret that Pablo Picasso was a big drinker and a huge fan of Absinthe. This is from Picasso’s blue period but in this painting I see more compassion than sadness. Portrayed here is not a sad drunk woman, she is merely having a “nip and a nap”. Wrapped in the warmth of her shawl and drink, this woman takes a short break from the drudgery of her everyday life. In 19th century Paris this was a popular pastime that is now mostly discouraged in drinking establishments. I guess when your only “drudgery” is a slow Internet; yoga might be a more acceptable method for taking a break from yourself. Namaste.
