"Old House Toronto, winter 1919" by Lawren Harris
Digging a little deeper, I found this early Harris landscape depicting a “yellow house”. It is more impressionistic than the more stylized and abstracted work he will later become famous for, but I still like it and the story it tells. Harris was born into a wealthy family which no doubt had many servants and maids, some of them “coloured”. I think what we are looking at here is LSH’s illicit mistrees/maid and their illegitimate son lovingly portrayed in front of their ramshackle house. You heard it here first!
