Move ahead 200 years and to France where Paul Cezanne really laid the fruit on with a heavy hand. There must be thirty apples here, plus other assorted unknown fruits. This isn’t a still life; it’s a produce stand! Keep in mind there is a certain amount of spoilage as a painting like this takes days to execute, so you need back up fruit as well. Speaking of spoilage, if you were to buy a bag of apples, to do this today, count on all the ones you can’t see being rotten! French wine and cookies don’t come cheap either! I have priced this paintings ingredients out and it’s close to a G-Note! Forget it – do a landscape.
