“Central Station II” by Jeffrey Smart
I like this urban landscape by the “Australian GNAY”. It’s not as pretty and painterly as yesterday’s drunken impression, but I prefer this painting’s clean lines and thought provoking edge (duh). JART’s compositions are always unique and the deeply shadowed foreground provides much interest here. Jeff has been described as the “master of urban stillness,” which I think is a great handle and I may have to make it my own. I have always been intrigued by empty cities. China’s “Ghost Cities” – build it and they will come, and Chernobyl – nuclear disaster and they will leave, are two examples. I also like Edward Hopper’s deserted, early morning, cityscapes, which we will look at tomorrow.
