“Christmas in the Brothel” by Edvard Munch
Here is a tender little Christmas vignette from the artist that gave us “The Scream” ($120,000,000 at a 2012 auction). “The girls” joyfully decorate the tree as “the madam” sucks on a smoke and checks her client list to see who has been naughty, and who has been nice. Is that GNAY passed out on the couch? It looks like he’s been naughty! I’m intrigued by Munch’s work and this week I want to take a close look at some of his lesser paintings and try to figure out what makes his art so popular and so valuable at auction. Munch led an often-troubled life, filled with illness, anxiety, and alcoholism, which all seem to fuel his dark and disturbing work. He certainly tells it like it is. Maybe that’s the ticket?
