“Head” by Francis Bacon
This is one of Bacon’s breakout pieces from the 1940’s. It features a screaming, grotesque, distorted person with bad teeth. The figure is also encased in a vague geometric shape, which will become FB’s signature move. Like GNAY, Francis had a first career before becoming an artist. GNAY was a stock broker and Bacon was a drinker/gambler. Basically, the same thing. Bacon will go on to paint variations on images like this for 40 years and eventually become one of the world’s most admired, sought after, and expensive artists. Although a tad more whimsical and a bit less thought provoking GNAY’s career path/trajectory is remarkably similar! Tomorrow: Bacon’s $190,000,000 opus.
