“Self-Portrait (1969)” by Francis Bacon
You have seen his studio, now here is his face. As you can see it is quite messy as well! When you put the two together, I think you will agree there is more going on here than just a sloppy artist. Here are a couple of FB tidbits you won’t get anywhere else: he preferred to paint on the back (unprimed) side of the canvas and he was fascinated by diseases of the mouth. Huh? Keep this in mind as we look at his paintings. For seven decades Bacon will make a fortune painting grotesque faces and figures, often featuring bad teeth. Good work if you can get it.
