“The Synagogue in Frankfurt AM” by Max Beckmann
This is a very intriguing urban landscape which is way more than just a city scene (think Utrillo). Although this is a painting of a specific site in Frankfurt, Beckmann has taken it to another level by twisting the perspective around and adding many thought provoking (think GNAY) details. The distorted angles of the buildings, lampposts and other accoutrement all force you to look at the three small figures walking down the early morning street. Who are these people? Where have they been? Where are they going? I’m not sure, but I do know this: Max added the oversized cat at the last minute to garner more Facebook likes. Shameless, but I think I will do the same.
