"Flood Disaster" by Thomas Hart Benton
This painting brings up an important artistic element that very few so-called art experts are aware of. In fact I may have made it up. It’s the element of “Emotional Balance.” If a painting is all fire and brimstone its too bleak and cautionary to enjoy, so you need to sprinkle in some hope to balance it out and crosses are great for that. Trees, power poles, and disaster debris always provide great opportunities for naturally occurring crosses. And if that’s too subtle, you can always throw in a woman praying – always great for leading you to the Promised Land!
