"Portrait of Jeanne Hebuterne" by Amedeo Modigliani
Modigliani almost exclusively painted portraits. They often feature unnaturally elongated necks and faces with expressionless almond shaped eyes. His simple forms and earthy tones always appeal to me. His style obviously worked better with tall thin people and he did over twenty portraits of Jeanne, his live in lover/girlfriend/muse. While not necessarily capturing his sitter’s likeness, Modigliani was able to capture their spirit. Did Amedeo like Jeanne? I hope so. The pregnant 22 year old threw herself out a fifth storey window the day after Modigliani died. Sounds like love to me.
