“Self-Portrait in Hell” by Edvard Munch
How sad is this? Talk about inner turmoil! Snap out of it big guy! Things aren’t that bad. Munch painted this at the age of forty, and although his best work was behind him, a living hell seems a tad dramatic. After the early death of his mother, little Edvard was raised by his father who was both mentally ill and a religious zealot. Munch himself blames his father for, “planting the seeds of madness” within him. This made for a great painter but also for a long life of mental distress, heavy drinking, and lots of sadness. I think I will leave it at that.
