MORE FROM THE ARTIST

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Since she was a little girl, Yana was always in love with someone or something and she transformed it onto canvas. Growing up as a child in communist Czechoslovakia was very safe and pleasant until she became a young adult and realized the hardships of the country and its people.

“That time I painted with oils and my fingernails were always dirty, I would rather buy the ice cream than the turpentine.  People had often mistaken me for a field worker”, she said.

Yana graduated from nursing school which was a strong and unconditional wish of her mother and she was thrown into reality. But working as a registered nurse didn’t discourage her from being creative. Yana enrolled herself in art school. Painting, creating, and writing poetry occupied all her free time.  Later she worked at her town’s TV station where others noticed her talent and ability to see through an aesthetic eye.  In 1980 her poetry was published in “Nove Slovo” (local magazine) and the same year she had her first art show, organized by City hospital and the faculty of Medicine.

In August of 1987, she became a refugee of a communist regime and arrived in Ottawa, Ontario in 1989.

She loves positive people and her projects are always based on that.  Yana’s idol is her fellow Slovak artist, Andy Warhol, and she follows E.R. Togle, a Filipino artist and creator of Positivism art.  She illustrates a children’s book and has art exhibitions in the Ottawa area frequently.
